shopping for herbs in a market Kuala Terengganu, about 400 miles north from Kuala Lumpur, on a patch of jungle smack dab on the South China Sea. we were shopping for herbs to make nasi ulam, a cooling salad of turmeric rice and tons of fresh herbs and greens, some of them a little strange. when i snapped this photo was munching a pancake called appam, made from fermented rice and coconut batter, the edges very crisp, the inside plump and succulent, sprinkled with sugar and chopped peanuts. i think i became addicted.
