11.6.06 our favorite breakfast in malaysia
our favorite breakfast in a cafe in Terengganu, Malaysia: a curry-stew of local tuna--the village we were in was a fishing village, and the people crazy for tuna. so many different types of tuna! this was a small tuna, as you can see, long long simmered so that it had the stong, delicious, savor of confit tuna, or even canned tuna, yet so fresh tasting, as it was...fresh! along with it is rice, and my favorite achar, a sweet-sour vinegar pickle of cucumber and other refreshing vegetables. Iced coffee, locally grown, to drink. aaaah. Posted by Picasa
11.6.06 shopping for herbs in kuala terengganu
shopping for herbs in a market Kuala Terengganu, about 400 miles north from Kuala Lumpur, on a patch of jungle smack dab on the South China Sea. we were shopping for herbs to make nasi ulam, a cooling salad of turmeric rice and tons of fresh herbs and greens, some of them a little strange. when i snapped this photo was munching a pancake called appam, made from fermented rice and coconut batter, the edges very crisp, the inside plump and succulent, sprinkled with sugar and chopped peanuts. i think i became addicted. Posted by Picasa

11.6.06 dessert in Malaysia
mmmmm, luscious neon-coloured concoctions of coconut, rice flour, fruits, all tied up in leaves such as panandus, and often steamed. This is taken at the Palace of the Golden Horses, Kuala Lumpur. My favorite treats were the chewy green ones coated in coconut, and also the soupy booboo cha-cha, a rice soupy mixture with coconut and strange sweet fruits swimming in it. Posted by Picasa

8.6.06 Roving Feast: On the High Seas to Cephallonia
Cue music: theme from Gilliguns Island, woven with strains from Zorba the Greek. Yo ho ho and pass the artichoke saganaki.
8.6.06 rhubarb! (Roving Feast)
